Spanish Teacher

¡Hola! Bonjour! Ciao! Kon'nichiwa!

It's an honor to be teaching foreign language at LaMotte School. My path was an unexpected and refreshing one into education and I am grateful that I could start my teaching journey at such a special place in the breathtakingly beautiful Bozeman, Montana! From a young age, all the way over in South Bend, Indiana, I was curious about languages other than my own. It seemed there was something profound to be learned from them. It all started when I was walking down the street with my Mom and we waited at a crossing next to a family who was speaking Spanish. I wanted to know what they were saying. I wanted to connect!

Around the same time, at about 8 years old, I was filling sketchbooks with drawings of dresses inspired from fashion magazines and nature. When it came time to answer that burning question people started to ask, 'what are you going to be one day?', I decided to try my hand at becoming a fashion designer (who would need to know many languages as she traveled the world, of course!)... So, at Indiana University Bloomington (go Hoosiers!), I was fortunate enough to work toward receiving a major in Spanish and minors in French and Art followed by a one-year degree in fashion design at FIT in New York City.

The initial dream of traveling the world as a famous fashion designer didn't quite pan out as I had imagined, but I did continue to use and build upon my language skills as I started a freelance illustration and textile/paper goods business in my 25th year. My doodles amazingly attracted an audience in Japan so I studied some Japanese for my business trips there with the goal of increasing sales. What I received though was much deeper. Friendships and respect. There's nothing quite like seeing someone's eyes light up because you took the time to learn their native tongue.

Wherever I lived I used my language skills to connect with people I may have never connected with otherwise, creating lifelong friendships and helping people/being helped in the most unexpected and heart-warming ways! From my core I believe knowing a second, third, fourth... language can be the key to unlocking some pretty incredible experiences, connections and opportunities. Students be warned - you never know where life (or language) may take you! No matter where we are born, we will hopefully experience some diversity as we travel through life and choose to...

Be curious, not judgmental. - Walt Whitman (as also emphasized in my favorite Apple+ series Ted Lasso)

Parents. It is my honor to work with your children. Please know you can always email or meet with me when I am at the school and I can also make time to meet outside of school. If you have any feedback or anything at all you would like to communicate, I am all ears and open-minded. I will be organizing field trips, nature walks, cooking classes and fiestas throughout the year and would love it if you joined for any and all. My goal is to make foreign language FUN, to connect students with the wonderfully diverse people in our community, opening minds to the different and new while building language skills and creating new pathways in those beautiful brains. It is my hope that learning foreign languages at a young age will help our students succeed in more ways than one.

I also hope to see you at the volleyball games this Fall! Our short season has already started and ends October 18th. It's a joy to be assistant coaching 3-6th graders from both LaMotte and Mt. Ellis Elementary with parents Jennifer Jones and Suzy Rose!

Gracias, merci, grazie, arigato gozaimasu...
